For the second year in a row, WD Door’s garage door donation helped welcome a veteran home.
This fall, that veteran was Johnny Mellor. After 16 years of serving our country, Johnny was presented with a brand-new home through Iowa Homes for Heroes, a non-profit with a simple but powerful mission: to build and donate homes for disabled veterans and first responders across Iowa. Each home is shaped around the family who will live in it, and each one comes together because local builders, community organizations, and state agencies work side by side. To learn more about the organization and how you can get involved, visit iowahomesforheroes.org.
Our team was honored to be one of the many hands behind this home. We donated the garage doors, just as we did last year, and coming back was an easy decision. When a project like this needs help, we would rather show up again than wait to be asked.
Why a Garage Door Donation Matters
A garage door isn’t the flashy part of a new build, but think about how a family actually lives in a home. It’s the first thing they see when they pull in and the last thing they close at night. It keeps vehicles, tools, and belongings secure, and it opens and closes many times a day, so it needs to work without a second thought. That’s what we wanted our garage door donation to give Johnny and his family: doors they can count on for years to come.
Of course, a home is about far more than its doors. It’s where a family feels safe, finds comfort, and makes memories, and after 16 years of service, Johnny and his family deserve exactly that. We’re honored to have played a small part in making it happen.
None of this comes together alone. A heartfelt thank you to KRM Custom Homes for the opportunity, and to every builder, vendor, partner, and individual who helped make this dream a reality.
Moments like these remind us why we do what we do. Having a home that truly fits your life can make all the difference. Welcome home, Johnny and family.
