Earlier this year, the nonprofit Iowa Homes for Heroes officially launched with a mission to build and donate homes for disabled veterans and first responders across the state. Momentum grew quickly. A lot was secured, and the Veterans Administration identified a veteran and his family who had lost everything in a fire. With a family selected and the site ready, the project moved forward.
A strong coalition came together to make the home a reality – including WD Door. Jerry’s Homes, a veteran-founded builder, took on construction. The Des Moines Home Builders Association (DSM HBA), through its HBA Cares program, joined in by mobilizing building professionals committed to improving housing opportunities in central Iowa.
In an inspiring act of generosity, WD Door embodied our core value of Servant Heart by donating the garage doors for the home. Their contribution ensured the veteran family received a complete, secure, and welcoming new start.
Looking ahead, R&R Realty Group has already donated the lot for the 2026 Iowa Homes for Heroes project, and the VA has begun the process of selecting next year’s recipient.
This project represents far more than construction, it reflects what can be achieved when organizations and individuals lead with a Servant Heart. Through Iowa Homes for Heroes, we’re not just building homes. We’re helping rebuild lives and restore hope.
